[Well, what should he say or do, really? He was quite happy to have the girls at Neatherfield, as he'd seen Jane's mood improve considerably in the presence of her sisters! Not that she was not a happy soul generally speaking, but there was a light about her that reflected off those other girls. Or so Charles truly felt.

She was off with Lizzy, of course, walking the grounds. Lydia had a rare moment of leisure and leave, and spent it with Kitty in the parlour. It was only Mary who was left off, and as Charles prompted a smile at her, he felt sure he mustn't really be feeling awkward. After all, they were family now!]

I hope that the trip here was no trouble to you! The weather has been uncommon hot lately. Ladies have quite so many layers of skirts to wear... I am impressed by your bravery in the face of the summer months!

[ It had been a cruel trick of Kitty's, hiding Mary's books the way she had. Mary never thought of her as particularly clever but she simply could not find them.

Which left her here, sitting across from her new brother-in-law. She was tempted to sit on her own hands to keep them from fussing restlessly, itching for a book or a piano. Mother "kindly" asked her not to play or sing at Neatherfield unless prompted. Jane would make a request, later, of course, though Kitty and Lydia were certain to guide her away from the grand in the parlor.

She peer at him though her spectacles, adjusting them until her vision clears.
]

I would not call it brave. It - ah - it is simply what ladies must do, though I am no expert on the new fashions. [ At all. ]

[He gave a flighty kind of smile, adjusting it almost the way Mary adjusted her glasses. That he meant well was beyond a doubt, of course, and he was glad to have her here; just, perhaps, he might not have been the most fitting company for her. He was not terribly sure how to make her comfortable, aside from the inside knowledge from Jane that leaving her with his own sister would not be the best means, perhaps.]

No! No, nor am I, I'm afraid. But it is very amazing, all the things a lady is expected to know. Drawing, music, fashion... I'm sure if I were to cram so much inside of my head, bits would begin to fall out from the other side.

[He gave, sincere in his compliment to the gender and trying somehow to also compliment her, even if just by association.]

[ Well, that is nice of him to think he so well-rounded. At the very least Bingley gets a small, modest smile from Mary, now resting her hands flat against the skirt of her dress. ]

You do dress well. I feel I may mistrust a true dandy. Like one may assume certain things about a lady who giggles constantly in public, one could speculate many things about a dandy besides his fondness for gaudy clothes. Can I take him for a serious fellow?

[ She lifts both shoulders in a tiny shrug. Perhaps she should take a few steps backwards over her words. ]

I - suppose that is a lesson one must learn time and time again, not to assume too much of a person.
