I've a friend much the same! Though, I admit I am unsure whether the wine disturbs him, or he disturbs his wine more. But you have a cure for too much of it? You are a good sort of brother then! And perhaps a sort of magician; why, while no one looks for a cure for being drunk, I believe there might be many men who would pay for a cure from its after-effects.

[Noted, all quite cordially. He hadn't forgotten his illness, of course, and even spared a few moments fretting over where to lay his clothing that it might be the least afflicted by any dust or possible contagion. When he at last found what looked to be he cleanest location, he continued,]

[He laughs at Joly's suggestion]

Agreed! There is something quite special about your women here. I can't determine what that is, however.

[It earns a laugh in return, Joly finding himself rather disposed to enjoying his company; as, really, he is rather disposed to with most company.]

It is in that you can't determine it, exactly. There is the mystique of them! Unfathomable creatures, really. But in all the best of ways. We hardly can compete, as a sex, don't you agree?

[With that said, he'd gingerly apply himself to the spring.]

Oh, men have their advantages over women--most of which I have discovered stem from lack of corsets--but agreed. I've three sisters back home and even I cannot begin to sort them out.

[The spring is mostly hidden by another screen, but there is a spot where, if Joly looks, he'd see Apollo's glowing hands as he brews the tea. The candles could easily be tricking his eyes, of course]

The lack of corsets is a happy state for us. Personally, I don't think I cut the figure for it. However, I also have a friend who might argue that women still have the advantage; in that they quite know how to remove them, whereas they sometimes baffle and prevent even the most talented of us.

[Not to be indelicate! Simply a truth of life.

And as he was addressing the man, he did out of natural instinct turn to where he had heard the voice... then offered a little bit of a squint, puzzled.

Candles? At midday?]

I say-- you heat the cup with a candle?

[Oops. He kills the lights in his hands and glances back at Joly briefly]

The labels have faded a bit, on some of the jars. The candlelight gives a little extra light so I am certain not to put oleander in when I meant lavender.

[And since oleander is deadly, that's a good thing]

As for corsets, I find them a nuisance. Not a woman alive looks better in a corset than she does out of one. They're terrible for the lungs and organs, anyway.

Really...? Well, careful not to ruin your eyes, staring into a bright flame so often.

[Still, for all he might sound a little too merry to be really taken seriously (as if thinking he was dying of an itchy throat might not be enough for that...), Joly was and could be sharp. He turned back around, but still glanced over to keep an eye out.

When and why was the candle so suddenly out, then? Hm!]

I would agree with everything you have just said. You're clearly a man with both sense and taste.

[The light goes back when he thinks he's safe, though dimmer. This time, however, he makes sure to light the actual candle next to the vials]

Again, I have three sisters who have spent hours regretting every decision to give into the pressures of society. [A chuckle] And countless mistresses who never look so lovely as they do when freed from their whalebone prisons.

Sisters! Who could imagine three, really. You're very wealthy by them; but also, I can see why you might have gone into medicine, as a profession, and find stress a main source of blame.

[He conceded, but still kept his eye on what he did now.

Despite noting the first candle being lit, he hadn't seen the match quite strike off for the second...]

Two candles? It isn't so dim in here...

[Should he really be working with concoctions, if he didn't know the vials, and couldn't see them besides?]

[He hums, though, as if he's thinking]

Joly paled a little at the notion he might be hallucinating. While he thought it was quite impossible for the light to be bouncing off at that angle or casting that sort of a glow, the concept that he might be seeing light spots in his vision flattened his mouth and worried him considerably.]

...Perhaps the spring is too warm, and I should exit it now?

[Fretfully.]

[Cruel, but to keep the illusion up, one must be cruel]

No, no, I assure you that is not it. However, I am more certain that this is largely stress induced--I have occasionally been known to be tense, relax suddenly, and think I am seeing something that is not there. It is usually caused by too much studying, at least on my part. I will prepare a few boxes of this tea for you to take home and drink when stressed.

That... that is very seemly of you, very kind.

[He agreed, with an involuntary little wince, still a little more anxious than he'd been upon arrival.

He felt certain he had seen a sort of glowing, and the more he thought back on it (with the abandon of assuming it was a hallucination, now) the more he felt sure he'd seen it coming from the man's hand.

He really must be quite ill, after all.]

I cannot say I've ever hallucinated before. In fact, I feel very sure of what it is I saw...

[Spoken, almost as much to himself as the healer.]

Joly stared, mouth slackening a little... before he promptly decided that he was not creative enough to have hallucinated that.

[Began, bewildered, and now a little bit... on-edge.]

[He gives back, under his breath.

Picking both hands up, he takes half a minute to check his pulse; just in case; then gives a bewildered nod.]

I'm all right, mostly. But you-- you're.

Well, you've just shot a rodent with your palm, Monsieur.

[Were you there for that bit? It was shocking.]

I don't have a knife on me and I cannot stand rats. Mice are perfectly fine, I'm quite fond of them, but rats can carry diseases and I will not tolerate them. Startled my so much that I forgot how to not blast it to bits, my apologies.

Quite... so.

[Came the gentle agreement, still trying; and perhaps failing; to understand what exactly had just happened.]

Rats, I have always thought, were a mistake of creation. But-- ...well, the question. Still stands as to...

[Picking up a wet hand, he scratched at his jaw a little, still looking bemused.]

Was it magic, then?

[All right, not he really did feel a bit silly. But short of him being a conductor of fire currents...]

Divine power. I can't use magic to save my life, and if I tried my dear sweet cousin would make sure my life would be a very painful one.

You are a sort of prophet, then, or-? Divinely blessed? Or the God Against Rats?

[Really, it could be anything at this point, and Joly was torn between curious and highly uncomfortable.]

Joly did not usually assume men literally embodied their names, or ah! How many little gods and goddesses they'd have about. He himself might literally fly away on his nickname.]

[Which he's still not 100% on, but you make a fine show of it, at least.]

Which, I do not mean to be rude! If you say you are, then all right, you are. It's not everyday I go to a clinic run by a pagan God, however, so you must excuse my surprise.

[He's well-mannered at least, even if it's a little ridiculous for the situation.]

I'll forgive you for that "pagan" remark as this is quite possibly the calmest anyone as ever been upon seeing that.

I assure you, the moment you walked in the door you were healed of anything that may have ailed you, except for those allergies of yours.

I'm still not entirely unconvinced that I am hallucinating. Though, my wits haven't melted in this spring, I don't believe.

[He did continue to stare though, if that was any mark of how really... not entirely placid he was.

But being somewhat naked, as he was, and beside someone who could create lightening in his hand, as it seemed; he didn't feel that altogether up and running was a firm solution to his confusion, in this case.

Also, Doctor Cynthius seemed a kind enough fellow, and at least rather calm and collected himself. It had its effects.]

Was 'pagan' awful rude? I confess, I do not know the terms as well as some! Did you say I had allergies?
